How the Express Entry System Works
& what do you need to know?
The Express Entry (EE) system is an electronic platform that Canada uses to manage applications for permanent residence for skilled workers. Introduced on January 1, 2015, it replaced the previous system, making the selection process more efficient and focused on the needs of the Canadian economy.
What programs does Express Entry cover?
The Express Entry system is used to manage applications for permanent residence under four main programs:

How it works? Express Entry process
The Express Entry process involves several key steps:
1. Create an online profile. You create a profile where you provide personal information such as your age, language proficiency (English and/or French), education, and work experience (both in Canada and abroad). If you have a spouse or common-law partner, their information is also included. You will require your language test results and educational credential assessment reports for this step.
2. CRS scoring system. Based on your information, the system assigns you points on various criteria. This system evaluates your profile and potential for success in the Canadian economy. The maximum number of points is 1,200, distributed among the following categories:
- The main factors of “human capital”: skills, experience and other personal qualities (maximum 500 points for one candidate, with a spouse – 460).
- Spouse or common law partner factors (maximum 40 points).
- Skill transferability factors (maximum 100 points).
- Additional factors such as a job offer, a Canadian degree, knowledge of French, relatives in Canada, and a nomination from a province or territory (maximum 600 points).
3. Waiting for an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Once your score is assigned, your application is placed into a virtual “pool” of candidates. Periodically, IRCC (Immigration Canada) selects the candidates with the highest scores in a corresponding draw and issues them invitations to apply for permanent residence.
4. Submission of a package of documents for permanent residence in Canada.
