Significant changes for international students in Canada came into effect on April 1, 2026. Most students are no longer required to apply for a Co-op Work Permit to complete mandatory internships (co-op or internship) as part of their program.

This change simplifies the process and allows students to start their co-ops right away.

Requirements:

• Full-time study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
• A study program of at least 6 months in duration leading to a diploma, degree, or certificate
• The co-op component does not exceed 50% of the total duration of the program
• Off-campus work eligibility
• A letter from the educational institution confirming that co-op is a mandatory part of the program
• A valid Study Permit or a submitted application for an extension

What to do if you have already applied forStartCo-op Work Permit?

If you already applied for a Co-op Work Permit before the changes came into effect, you don't need to take any action. IRCC will return eligible applications.

Important to note:

These changes do not apply to secondary school students. For them, the requirement to obtain a Co-op Work Permit remains in effect.
