Category-based draws in the Express Entry system are draws based on specific occupational categories. For many candidates, this is an additional opportunity to receive an invitation to apply, even if their overall CRS score is not high. What are the requirements?
Minimum 12 months of experience in the last 3 years
- The candidate must have at least 12 months of work experience in the last three years (previously 6 months was required).
- The experience may be full-time or part-time equivalent.
- Experience does not have to be continuous
Experience in the occupation from the category list
Work experience must be obtained in one profession (NOC-code) included in the list of the relevant selection category.
Place of gaining experience
Experience may be gained both in Canada and abroad. Exceptions apply when the terms of a specific round explicitly require Canadian experience.
Compliance with the requirements of a specific round
Each category-based draw round is published with official instructions. Applicants must meet all requirements specified for a specific round, including language requirements, eligibility for a specific NOC, and any additional conditions.
